February 27,2013

Dear Covenant family,

“Hello, my name is…. And I’m a recovering atheist’. This may sound like a confession from a local alcoholic’s anonymous group, but could very well be made in church. In his book ‘The Christian Atheist – believing in God but living as if He doesn’t exist’ author Craig Groeschel states that in his own journey he came to realize that he ‘was a full time pastor, but a part time follower of Jesus Christ’. It happens when you believe in God,

  • But don’t really know him
  • But are ashamed of your past
  • But aren’t sure he loves you
  • But not in prayer
  • But don’t think He is fair
  • But won’t forgive
  • But don’t think you can change
  • But still worry all the time
  • But pursue happiness at any cost
  • But trust more in money
  • But don’t share your faith
  • But not in his church*

The book of Judges is all about a group of people who actually lived in the Promised Land, but lived as if their God didn’t exist. Fear, idolatry and compromise with evil had plagued them and put them right back into bondage - just like in the days of Egypt. Today Christian atheism is still alive, just like it was in the time of Judges. The good news is that God came to deliver you and me, changing us from depressing bondage into glorious freedom. Join me this Sunday as we seek to follow Him more closely, enjoying Him more intimately and shedding anything in our lives that hinders us from living LIFE!

In preparation for Sunday, please read Chapter 8 of ‘the Story’. For those desiring further research: the complete story of this chapter can be found by reading the book of Judges.

* Bullet points represent chapters in his book
