May 8, 2013

Dear Covenant family,

‘As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem. When you see this, your heart will rejoice and you will flourish like grass’ – Is 66:13

When I grew up in Holland a sermon called ‘the Father Heart of God’ affected our nation. Instead of a God who would send fire down from heaven on your smallest mistake or misstep, He was portrayed as a loving Father, desiring a relationship with his people. A book was written that pictured a dad and son sitting together in a comfortable recliner. God wanted to be an intimate friend. It impacted my life. But how about a sermon on ‘the Mother Heart of God?’. Have you ever heard one? Isaiah sure seems to think about God in that way as well.

In Chapter 16 of ‘the Story’ the ‘mess’ seems to be getting bigger. The northern Kingdom is carried away in exile and the Syrian army lays siege of Jerusalem. The prophet Isaiah prophecies the exile for the southern Kingdom also. He talks about God’s wrath and coming judgment. It isn’t pretty. And that’s where the mother heart of God comes in: Isaiah prophecies that it won’t end with Gods judgment. God has a higher plan. An Upper Story. For you! As we honor our mothers this Sunday, let’s take a closer look at God’s Loving Heart for you – both as a Father and…… as a mother! Here is what Isaiah says:

Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! – Is 49:15

In preparation for this Sunday, please read Chapter 16 in ‘the Story’ and for those who want to ‘dig deeper’ read the book of Isaiah.
