March 18,2015

Dear Covenant family,

‘I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing’ – John 15:5

Do you ‘get’ His Power? It is often found as an exchange to our ‘own’ power. Martha Snell Nicholson (1898-1953) discovered this truth. She looked powerless as a bedridden invalid who suffered from four incurable diseases, who struggled with pain for over 35 years.  After being an invalid for many years, her loving husband, who she depended on, died suddenly.  Yet throughout her life she ‘got’ the key to share in His Power. Through all her pain and suffering came some of the finest Christian poetry ever written. Listen to ‘a Mendicant (beggar) of God’

I stood a mendicant of God before His royal throne
And begged him for one priceless gift, which I could call my own.
I took the gift from out His hand, but as I would depart
I cried, “But Lord this is a thorn and it has pierced my heart.
This is a strange, a hurtful gift, which Thou hast given me.”
He said, “My child, I give good gifts and gave My best to thee.”
I took it home and though at first the cruel thorn hurt sore,
As long years passed I learned at last to love it more and more.
I learned He never gives a thorn without this added grace,
He takes the thorn to pin aside the veil which hides His face.

May this and other illustrations from John 15, lead us to ‘get’ His Power this Sunday!
