March 25, 2015

Dear Covenant family,

‘They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! – Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” – John 12:5

How could they be so wrong? One week they were crying ‘Hosanna’; the next week ‘crucify Him!” But don’t just blame the Jews 2,000 years ago. I have been challenged by reading a book by Erwin Lutzer called ‘Hitler’s Cross’. In it the author describes the fascinating reality that in World War Two, the large majority of the church followed their Fuhrer and gave him full support. The cross eventually became embroidered within the swastika, and church members who heard trains filled with crying Jews on their way to concentration camps passing by their churches on a Sunday morning, sang louder to silence the cries.

Both stories should wake us up. Is it possible to cry ‘Hosanna’ one day and realized we ‘didn’t get’ His Kingdom? Is it possible to think and claim you are the church while marching to a different drum while thinking you are doing just fine?

Jesus seemed to think we could, and he ends his discourse to the disciples with the famous prayer of John 17. In it He describes how we are called as agents of a different Kingdom – apart from the world – yet making a profound influence on those around us by the love we have for Him and one another. It’s time to ask ourselves the question: Do we get His Kingdom? And what does His Kingdom look like? The answer may surprise you: Christ in you, the Hope of Glory!
