December 31, 2014

Dear Covenant family,

"Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it” – Proverbs 4:23  (Gods Word Translation)

Are you making any New Year resolutions? Some may, hoping for a good start or a better New Year. Some may not, as resolutions tend to be broken, and who wants to deal with more disappointment? May I suggest to you one solid New Years Resolution? Keep a close watch on your heart, because from it flows everything in life. Resolutions often fail when our heart hasn’t been changed. We miss the right foundation to build on. Full life takes place when the heart beats right! I like the word ‘flow’. It speaks of a natural result, automatic – you can’t avoid it. It’s not forced, but it simply happens.  This Sunday we’ll look at a healthy flow of life for you in 2015 by doing what matters most: guarding your heart. Look forward to see you Sunday!

White Elephant tomorrow

Darlene Berg writes: White Elephant to take place on New Years Day from 3-7 pm. We will start with children’s white elephant exchange, a white chili/chowder early supper and then the "adult/adolescent" white elephant exchange and cookie dessert. Bring a gift in your home that you no longer need (nothing trashy, don’t buy anything in the store, something that is ‘fun’ or ‘unique’) and bring some food. Food categories include:

  1. Soups: Chowder/White Chili;
  2. Bread/Crackers
  3. Cookies
  4. Nibbles – fruit/cheese vegies

Year End Giving

Treasurer Donna Masson wants to remind you that it is not to late to make Year End Donations to CBC as long as your check is dated for 2014 and in the offering box by this Sunday. Let’s end the year strong financially. Thank you for giving!

Men’ Breakfast: Because of these and other events, no Men’ Breakfast in January, but it’s to resume in February

2015: Cast our Nets – South Growth Group Initiative to reach young families

Starting January, 2015 the south group will be meeting every other Sunday at the church immediately following the service to discuss "Parenting with Purpose and Grace.”. Open to other families

December 17

Dear Covenant family,

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given’ – Isaiah 9:6

I just walked around our sanctuary, praying for you and for this Christmas Sunday, and enjoyed the stage set up. The lights are set up; a beautiful inn and a unique manger/stable has been created, complete with straw. But more than the stage set up, and the wonderful commitment of all the actors, players and musicians that have worked so hard to prepare for this, is our biggest hope: That the ultimate Act will be Christ - born in a manger to save us from our sins. He promises to be in our midst when we gather in His Name. May He be clearly seen this Sunday! Please remember that there will be NO Sunday School, but we’ll start our service at the ‘normal’ time of 10.45. Invite friends, family, and neighbors to join us!

Then on Wednesday, December 24 from 5.00 – 6.00 pm we will have our Christmas Candle Light service. We will be singing Christmas Songs as we join Mary in the 3 distinct phases she went through in her journey of becoming mother. I think you’ll recognize the same three in your life as you live out your call to follow Him. We will traditionally end it by lighting our candles together, singing ‘Silent Night’.

Christmas Baskets

Don’t forget to bring your food items this Sunday as packages will be delivered early next week. Questions? Call Linda Davis at 631-5808.

Date set for White Elephant

Darlene Berg writes: White Elephant to take place on New Years Day from 3-7 pm. We will start with children’s white elephant exchange, a white chili/chowder early supper and then the "adult/adolescent" white elephant exchange and cookie dessert.

Change Youth Night

Due to busy Christmas schedules and sporting events the next youth event has been changed to Friday, January 2. We are hoping to take full advantage of ‘Christmas break fever’ with parents and kids ready to leave the house to see their friends – a great time to open up the house!

Men’ Breakfast: Because of these and other events, no Men’ Breakfast in January, but it’s to resume in February

2015: Cast our Nets – South Growth Group Initiative to reach young families

John Pierce writes: Notice!  The south group has continued to grow and transform over the past months; consequently, we have developed a plan starting January, 2015.  We will be meeting every other Sunday at the church immediately following the service.  We have ordered a study curriculum called "Parenting with Purpose and Grace."  We are excited to begin this study together and invite you to join us.  Lunch will be provided on a scheduled rotation basis.  This is not only a chance for us to grow together in our journey of faith, but also to cast our nets and invite families and friends to join us in understanding how our Heavenly Father deals with us and how we can parent our children according to His design.

December 10

Dear Covenant family,

Call to Worship: "And Mary said: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant’ Luke 1:46-48

Humility seems to be a trademark of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Humility is one of the most beautiful and valuable things anyone can possess. We admire and love people that have it, and typically dislike those that don’t. Everybody tries to pretend they have lots of it, yet it seems to be missing more and more in our society. In my books of economics that makes it highly valuable and expensive – and not just among us: it is highly valued by God! He actually promises to live near those that are humble, which reminds me of the words of the angel to ‘humble’ Mary: ‘Greetings, you who are highly favored’. This Advent Sunday, let’s find and enjoy the gift priceless humility that beats any present under any tree!

Dear Covenant family,

Call to Worship: "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”2 Timothy 2:2

We have been praying for young families and individuals to come to CBC. You can see that God has started to answer our prayers! I believe it’s time for our next step: the Bible calls us to make room for them in our midst so they can exercise their gifts in our common call to reach out to all generations. We are so excited to have John Pierce share with us this Sunday in our 2nd Sunday of Advent. He may be bringing some of his siblings with him as well to help with special music. And then this Saturday, during Men’s Breakfast, another ‘young man’, Nathan Ballard will share his testimony. I plan to be there for both times -  look forward to it!

Remainder Advent Schedule:

During the 3rd Sunday of Advent, December 14, we will have a ‘regular’ service with Marco. Wanda Pruett hopes to bring us Special Music. Our Family Christmas Service is to take place on the 4th Sunday of Advent, December 21. Participants in the Christmas Play are practicing after church the next few Sundays. We’ll end our Christmas Season with a Christmas Eve Service on Wednesday, Dec 25 at 5 pm.

Bed sheets needed for Christmas Family Service

Byron asks for bed sheets to help set up the Christmas play decorations. He is looking for white, brown, or tan sheets. They don’t have to be ‘new’. If you have any, please bring them this Sunday. They can be returned to you after the service on the 21st.

Men’s Breakfast this Sunday at 8, calling all c(r?)ooks & friends to join us at 7

Come at 8 for the program and/or earlier to have fun cooking up a storm! Marco will bring the eggs, bacon and other goodies. We will cook them together at 7 in order for us to eat at 8.

Christmas Concerts in our Community

Looking for a Christmas Concert? Naomi passed on a few good options:

Prayer and Praise Reports:

Randy asks: please no visits or phone calls as Mildred’s health in this situation is fragile, concerned that too much attention might actually harm her. Prayer is what they are asking for. Burial on Saturday in St. Louis.

Dear Covenant family,

Call to Worship: "What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up”.1 Cor 14:26

I look forward to our testimony time this Sunday; our first Advent Sunday for Christmas. Our theme is “Emmanuel – God with us”. Please come prepared to share what God is doing in your life. Please keep it to a maximum of 5 minutes, honoring others who may want to share as well. In order to maximize our time together, you are encouraged to prepare your testimony; you may want to write it down, or ‘rehearse’ it, or prepare it in some other way.  I look forward to this Sunday because of the promise in the verse mentioned above: When we share the Living Bread together, the body will be built up – Jesus grows when we share Him. Look forward to Sunday!

Dear Covenant family,

Call to Worship: "How can I set this before a hundred men?" his servant asked. But Elisha answered, "Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the LORD says: 'They will eat and have some left over.'" – 2 Kings 4:43

We look forward to have Lonnie and Debbie Smith and their two daughters join us this Sunday. They are our missionaries in France. Lonnie will share in Sunday School and during the service. During the service we will also get a sneak preview at our next story in the Gospel John. It’s a story of a little boy who showed up at the Jesus event with only a few loaves of bread. It might look and feel insignificant, yet used mightily by God. Does this sound like you, me and Covenant Bible Church? Come this Sunday to expect to hear encouraging French and local stories how God is reaching out to the world around us, choosing to use ‘little boys’ with ‘small loaves’ – you and me; for His Glory!

Dear Covenant family,

Call to Worship: ‘How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God’–1 John 3:1

“Who do you think you are?” You may have heard that question the first time you were in kindergarten, all through high school and even in your professional or family life. It may be a question we ask ourselves: “Who do I think I am?’. When the Pharisees asked Christ this, he immediately began talking about his relationship with His Father. There is security! May we unlock that security this Sunday: ‘What is Your Mighty Fortress?’

Next week: Testimony from missionaries Lonnie & Debbie Smith during entire hour Sunday School and during the main service

Casting our Nets – 3 Opportunities:

1. This Sunday: Packing Party Shoeboxes – Operation Christmas Child

A light lunch will be provided for the packing party this Sunday immediately following the service. We will collect shoe boxes that day through Sunday the 23rd. Please know that even if you do not have enough to pack your own shoebox but have items that we could use, you can bring them and we'll pack up boxes with items that others have and items left over from last year. Questions? See Darlene Berg

2. Christmas Outreach with Family Christmas Play

It’s time to cast our nets during Christmas! Expect an email later this week and/or a copy of the outline for the program with opportunities for you to sign up this Sunday for a role for our Christmas Play scheduled for December 21. Practice to start November 30th. Questions? See Byron Huebschen.

3. Thanksgiving at Shared Blessings

You can serve this thanksgiving by helping Shared Blessings serve Thanksgiving meals to the community from Thursday, November 27 thru Sunday, November 30 from 11.00 am to 6.00 pm. Last year close to 500 people were being served. An opportunity to be involved and explanation will be given this Sunday. Questions? See Pat van Hoogstraat.
